Think big. Start small!
These days the ‘social impact’ terminology is thrown around the Internet, with about 1,710,000,000 search results on Google.
And you probably keep hearing businesses claiming, “we’re making a social impact”. Or customers say, “I prefer to shop from companies who make a difference”… but what do they mean? And how can everyone make a social impact?
Social impact can be defined as the effect on people and communities that happens due to activities, projects, or policies. In essence, social impact gathers positive changes that address social challenges. Businesses or organizations can achieve these goals through conscious efforts or activities in their operations and administrations.
At its core, social impact started as a form of philanthropic efforts to help those in need. We are all aware that philanthropy is not something new, as many people and organizations have always been ready to lend a helping hand.
But this concept entered the mainstream in 1972. The ideology was made famous by Bill Drayton, an American social entrepreneur who had a long record of founding organizations that gear toward making a social impact. He is an ardent believer that everyone is capable of making a change, and therefore, we are all “changemakers”.
A business or organization that wants to make social impacts can create changes in a lot of ways. Some of the challenges in need of help are global warming, environmental deterioration, the inefficient use of natural resources, the increase in migratory crises, the violation of human rights, war conflicts, food crises in certain regions, employment crises, or the severe health crisis resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.
